BGN doubles down on LPG: 2 more dual-fuel VLGCs ordered at HD Hyundai
BGN has signed for two more 93,000 cbm dual-fuel LPG VLGCs at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries on 8 June, lifting its on-order book at the Korean yard to six gas carriers for 2029 delivery.
Singapore-headquartered commodities trader BGN signed on 8 June 2026 for two additional dual-fuel Very Large Gas Carriers at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. Each ship is specified at 93,000 cbm cargo capacity and is scheduled for delivery in 2029 from the Korean yard. The pair brings BGN's standing order book at HD HHI to six LPG VLGCs — the first four, at 90,000 cbm each, were contracted on 16 April 2026, also for 2029 delivery and also configured dual-fuel with an ammonia-capable arrangement.
Around the same window, BGN raised $450 million in a financing facility on 21 April, with Rabobank, Crédit Agricole CIB and Natixis CIB as lead banks. The wider book includes two VLGCs being built in a joint venture with HMM for first-half 2027 delivery, and one 174,000 cbm LNG carrier — the Amore Mio I — for early 2027. CFO Rui Florencio framed the financing as a vote of confidence in the build programme from BGN's banking partners. No contract value for the new VLGC pair was disclosed by either party.
For the manning side, the signal is straightforward. Six 2029 VLGC deliveries from a single owner mean six new senior gas-officer teams to assemble — Master, Chief Engineer, Chief Officer, Second Engineer, and the cargo engineer where the type-rating expectation is highest. Dual-fuel and ammonia-readiness extends the gas-handling competency window further out: the SIGTTO trainee positions placed in 2026 and 2027 are the ones that will sit those bridges.
What it means for owners
- Plan senior gas-officer recruitment for 2028-2029 deliveries now — the type-rated pool for dual-fuel and ammonia-ready VLGCs is already thin and only tightens with each fresh order at HD HHI and Jiangnan.
- Trainee and dual-rank placements made this year are what fill those seats in three years' time — not last-minute spot fixtures from the gangway.
